Consulting services for hunting grounds and forest estates

Consulting Services for Private Owners in the Province of Cuenca

At Dendron, we have been working since February for the company Agroambiental Bullaque S.L., based in Ciudad Real, within the framework of subsidies from the FEADER funds with the aim of providing free advice to forest operations and hunting grounds in the province of Cuenca.

The consulting, which is done in person and on an individual basis, is carried out at the request of the users, including at least two visits to the operation. During the first visit, the diagnosis of the operation is carried out. In these visits, various aspects of the general condition of the hunting ground or forest property are primarily evaluated. Among these, monitoring of infrastructures for both small and large game fauna is highlighted, such as specific drinking troughs and feeders for each, or artificial shelters for partridges or rabbits, for example.

During the second visit, after delivering the initial reports to the owners, the follow-up of the recommendations made is verified. Additionally, to complete the service, all necessary telephone and telematic support is provided.

This project has given us a broader perspective by firsthand knowledge of the needs of all the stakeholders involved in this sector.

The actions carried out will be reflected in one or more advisory reports that must be delivered to the owner of the operation.

  1. The advisory reports must comply with the following contents:

a) They must be prepared individually for each user, including the following contents:

  • Diagnosis of the situation of the operation, referring to productive, economic, technical, environmental, socio-labor, and quality of life aspects of the owner.

  • Report of specific recommendations that allows users to fulfill their obligations, improve the management and situation of their operations, while enabling them to understand how these contribute to a more sustainable agriculture.

  • Final advisory report and follow-up of recommendations.

b) They must be signed by all technicians involved in their preparation and by the responsible person of the entity along with the acknowledgment from the advised.

In the preliminary study of the diagnosis, an evaluation of administrative data (always under the regulation of the AEPD) and the natural state of the operation under advisement is carried out. Climatic, topographic, vegetation (phytosociological and existing), presence of damage by fauna, and affects by pests or diseases are some of the examples included in this initial diagnostic report.

In this process of advising hunting grounds and forest properties in the province of Cuenca, we have traveled much of the Cuenca geography. A total of 22 operations, from Poyatos in the heart of the forested area to Villanueva de la Jara in the south, with vast expanses of vineyards.

One of the common concerns conveyed to us by representatives of sports associations was the decline of some small game species, especially notable being the red-legged partridge and the hare. However, on the other hand, and serving as optimism, in some places where releases are not practiced, we have found an increase in the population dynamics of the partridge, encountering several flocks during the visits.

Hunting grounds with good wildlife management, providing food and water at the most critical times of the year.

On the other hand, due to Order 73/2021 establishing basic regulations on health actions in game species acting as reservoirs of tuberculosis, and considering the conditions in which many hunting grounds are found (Special Health Risk Zone where there is presence of wild boar and deer that could be in contact with livestock), it is necessary to categorize them and see the corrective measures to be applied.

Due to the new regulations regarding Tuberculosis in Castilla-La Mancha, recommendations were offered in most operations regarding the new Order 74/2021 which develops control measures for animal by-products not intended for human consumption in the hunting practice of big game in Castilla-La Mancha.

Many of the owners were unaware of the concept of the deposit point for managing remains in hunts that take place during the season. Regarding this management of remains, there is a substantial change from what could be done until now, as in areas of special risk, burial is not allowed for collective hunts and must be done through the installation of a deposit point or collected by an authorized Sandach manager. At Dendron, we provided owners with updated maps with a range of options for optimal areas to install these points according to regulation.

But not only were reports made for recommendations on improvements in hunting grounds, but we also encountered some properties of small tourist businesses where the main use is recreational, or small family properties (50 hectares) where extensive and traditional forest management is carried out.

In general, apart from indications on forest management techniques, we also provided lists of actions to improve, preserve, and restore the biodiversity of the operations. These are operations managed by managers increasingly concerned with sustainable management, which proposes agriculture with practices more focused on wildlife conservation. We left with the feeling that most owners and managers are confident that this new approach is compatible with the hobby of hunting.

We will inform you of new projects where we will propose the establishment of standards such as GECISO in future hunting management plans or the use of the hunting observatory developed by the Hunting Federation of Castilla-La Mancha and the Artemisán Foundation.
